The World Needs More Leaders Like Pat

How Pat Reduced her Town’s Streetlight Energy Use by 75%

Pat Wartinger wanted to make a difference in her community but she didn’t know how to talk to the leaders who she could partner with to create sustainability initiatives in their town.

Pat took the Introduction to Community Climate Action with Pachamama Alliance to learn how she could have productive conversations with key stakeholders in her community to collaborate on climate justice action.

She went on to successfully lobby their town government to form a sustainability council which Pat is now on. This sustainability council has created multiple initiatives including the switching of all street lights to LEDs, reducing the town’s streetlight energy consumption by at least 75%.

Now, Pat is leading her community to build a large-scale composting facility that will use vermiculture, the cultivation of earthworms to create nutrient-rich compost, which will be distributed to local farmers and gardeners.

How Cecilie Diverted 28 Tons of Food Waste from Landfills

Cecilie Stuart in Topanga, CA had a vision of teaching her community the links between soil health, regeneration, and food systems.

After taking our 2-hour introductory course, Awakening the Dreamer, Cecilie started a nonprofit, Full Circle Compost (FCC). When they were first starting out, FCC's team was trying to do too many things at once, was burned out, and did not have financial stability.

In our Design Thinking process, Cecilie learned she needed to focus and streamline FCC’s work where they were having the most impact, in educational settings. Soon they got their first contract with a public school implementing their program for diverting lunchtime food waste from landfills and teaching children how to compost.

Now, FCC manages 9 community and school composting sites, has built and installed over 50 compost bins throughout the Santa Monica Mountains, has created over 20 tons of nutrient-rich soil, and has diverted 28 tons of food waste from landfills.

Action is What's Needed Now

When the Pachamama Alliance was founded over 25 years ago, the need we saw was to change consciousness and to wake people up to the crises facing humanity. And so we set out to shift worldviews with courses like Awakening the Dreamer.

But the world has changed. Today, it’s clear that in order to address the climate crisis, what’s needed now is to put that energy into action for climate justice.

Inspired by Our Indigenous Partners

Our new programs train people to take local climate justice action in their communities. We give them community organizing and activist skills to support local actions or develop new ones in their community, while fostering connection and collaboration.

These programs are unique because they are inspired by the lessons we've learned from working with our Indigenous partners in the Amazon: the importance of interconnectedness, being in relationship with others, and being in relationship with the Earth.

Building Skills for Taking Action

Over the last year, 170 people have participated in the Introduction to Community Climate Action—a 10-week training for developing key skills for local community action and climate justice.

Grounded in social justice and a connection to Earth, participants discover community organizing tools and skills to find allies to partner with in their communities.

Coaching That Sees Projects to Fruition

Our work does not stop at the end of the 10-week training. There are now over 100 projects started by graduates including food justice in California, climate solution lobbying in Japan, and river restoration in India.

We continue to offer support and learning for training participants through The Game Changer Action Network (The Network). It is is a space for our community of change-makers to connect, collaborate, and learn.

The Network also acts like an incubator and accelerator program for community climate justice projects.

We match teams with expert advisors and provide them with ongoing support to help them overcome obstacles and bring their projects to fruition with measured outcomes.

What Participants Have Said

Our participants rave about their experiences with our Action Trainings and the Network.

“The regular support by Pachamama Alliance monthly, and annually, has been a guiding force in my deciding what exactly to focus on in climate regeneration. The leadership guidance kept our wheels turning and inspired us when we were frustrated or overwhelmed. And the innovative Design Thinking training really helped us feel that we were on the right track in soil regeneration, and climate systems and solutions we were offering our youth and community. ”

“The Introduction to Community Climate Action is a hands-on program to support you in taking action in your community. Trainers are dedicated and compassionate with years of experience they each share with you to help you accomplish what you dream. An extraordinary opportunity.”

"The training gives concrete skills and frameworks to "go out and do something" that you've always dreamed of doing but needed a bit of encouragement and structure to act on.”
