Qualified Charitable Distribution

Make a gift from your IRA and help protect the Earth for future generations.

What is a qualified charitable distribution?

A qualified charitable distribution (QCD) is a meaningful way to give if you’re 70½ or older. It allows you to transfer funds directly from your individual retirement account (IRA) to Pachamama Alliance. Because the gift goes straight from your IRA to charity, it doesn’t count as taxable income and can also help you meet your required minimum distribution (RMD).

Instead of taking withdrawals that may increase your tax liability, a QCD lets you put those funds to work for a cause you care about.

Why consider a QCD?

A QCD is particularly useful for individuals who have reached the age where they must take required minimum distributions (RMDs) but don't need the income and want to support charitable causes in a tax-efficient manner.

  • Lower Taxes: Reduce your taxable income while meeting your RMD.
  • Direct Giving: Funds move straight from your IRA to Pachamama Alliance, no middle steps.
  • Immediate Results: Your gift goes to work right away to sustain Indigenous leadership and rainforest protection.
  • Efficient: Avoid extra paperwork while aligning your retirement plan with your values.

QCDs offer a smart, streamlined way to make a real difference, while making the most of your retirement assets.

How it Works

  1. Contact your IRA administrator to request a qualified charitable distribution.
  2. Ask them to send the funds directly to Pachamama Alliance.
  3. Provide them with the following information:
    Organization: Pachamama Alliance
    Federal EIN
    (Tax ID): 94-3249793
Address: P.O. Box 29191, San Francisco, CA 94129
  4. Ask your IRA administrator them to include your name and address on the check so we can acknowledge your gift.
  5. Notify us at donations@pachamama.org so we can identify your incoming gift.

Is a QCD right for you?

Qualified charitable distributions are a great option if:

  • You are 70½ or older when making the charitable gift.
  • You're 73 or older and taking required minimum distributions (RMDs) from your IRA but would prefer to give that money to charity rather than pay taxes on it.
  • You don’t itemize deductions on your tax return.
  • You live in a state that doesn’t offer a charitable income tax deduction.
  • You’re retired and no longer contributing to a workplace retirement plan.

A few things to keep in mind:

  • You can donate up to $108,000 in 2025 per individual directly from your IRA to qualified charities.
  • Married couples, if both eligible, can each give up to $108,000, totaling $216,000 annually.
  • Donations must be made by December 31 to qualify for the year.
  • QCDs apply only to eligible IRAs: traditional, inherited, inactive SEP, and inactive SIMPLE IRAs.
  • QCDs do not apply to 401(k), 403(b), or other employer-sponsored retirement plans.
